What are some cool 12 bar substitutions/extensions?

Being primarily a blues player, I'm looking for some interesting ways to build on typical I-IV-V fanfare beyond adding the 7 or 9 to every single chord. So, if you have any favorites or suggestions, I'd like to see some ideas.

By the way, just because the title says "12 bar" doesn't mean I don't want to see any 8, 16, or other formats, so feel free to share anything you've got.

Hey Andy,

A great book that will really help spice up your substitutions and extensions is Chord Chemistry by Ted Greene.

There is a whole section about different ways to harmonize , voice, and use substitutions for blues.

Plus there are tones of other great ideas and topics covered in the book that will really help expand your chord vocab.

Check it out!

So I got the book and WOW. Thousands of new voiceings, rules for substitution, this is an incredible book. I feel like a more complete player already, and I've only scratched the surface of it so far. Can't wait to finally become free of the same few bar chord voiceings.

And the part about blues and rock progressions substitution looks spectacular

so in conclusion, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Jeff!

If you are ever intrigued with Jazz Comping, I also highly recommend Barry Galbraith's comping books.
